Barcelona is a true global city of breathtaking architecture, countless world-class museums, bustling markets, colorful parks and high-end fashion. This town is big but perfectly discoverable on foot. Imposing Montjuïc Castle is a good starting point for a stunning panorama of the city, and the renowned Joan Miró museum and Catalonian national art museum are also in the area. One might fill an entire day strolling amidst the 12th- and 13th- century architecture of the Gothic Quarter and then checking out the extensive collection of the Museu Picasso. But Barcelona may be most renowned for the unmistakable imprint made on the city by architect Antoni Gaudi, from the spectacular unfinished church of La Sagrada Família to the whimsical Park Güell. More of his work can be found along tree-lined La Rambla, one of the world's most famous promenades and the perfect place to experience the striking architecture, designer shopping and delicious tapas of the city.

One of Europe's favorite playgrounds, Ibiza boasts more than 100 miles of coastline frosted with exquisite beaches. It's a hub of sun worship, white sand, beach bars and clubs that buzz all night. And there's history too. The fortified Old Town, known as Dalt Vila, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a spectacular example of Renaissance military architecture. Carrer del Calvari leads to Portal Nou, the entrance through the old city walls, and a walk up the hill reveals panoramic views of the city. Interestingly, the contemporary art museum is found here - housed in a 17th-century building - as is the impressive Ibiza Cathedral. Another fascinating site, the necropolis of Puig des Molins features ancient burial chambers and treasures found within them, including painted ostrich eggs. The island
is home to multiple vineyards producing high-quality wines, and shopping ranges from the famous hippy markets to luxury boutiques.

This British Overseas Territory on Spain's southern coast is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, fondly called The Rock. For spectacular views, take a six-minute cable car ride to the top, where you can see two continents, two bodies of water and three countries. A short walk brings you to the Gibraltar Nature Reserve and the cheeky Barbary macaques, the famous monkeys that roam freely here. Other highlights include the illuminated stalagmites. of St. Michael's Cave and the Great Siege Tunnels, a maze of defensive fortifications carved into the rock in the 18th century and extended to an underground city during World War II, housing the garrison, canons, artillery and food. Another cave adventure is the Gorham's Cave Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site where rock carvings provide evidence of Neanderthal man dating back 120,000 years.

DAY 5: FOURTH STOP — MARBELLA, SPAIN

Nestled along the famously scenic shores of Spain's Costa del Sol, the fashionable town of Marbella is a seaside resort with the stunning Sierra Blanca mountain range for a backdrop. With idyllic beaches like the perennially popular Playa de Venus and the Playa Casablanca lined with high-end restaurants, Marbella more than lives up to the meaning of its name, "beautiful sea." In the heart of the historic quarter known as Casco Antiguo lies the Plaza de los Naranjos, a picturesque and fragrant gathering place where locals and tourists alike come to relax beneath the orange trees and dine alfresco on fresh seafood at the cafés surrounding the pretty square. Heading back toward the waterfront, the wide pedestrian walkway of Avenida del Mar features ten large bronze sculptures by Salvador Dalí, and just west along the coastline, the yacht-filled marina of Puerto Banús is home to one of the world's most luxurious designer shopping districts.

Surrounded by endless beaches on the Costa de la Luz, Cádiz is an elegant seaport and also one of the oldest inhabited cities in Europe, having been founded by the Phoenicians circa 1100 BC. Playa de la Caleta and Playa de la Victoria are among the best beaches in Spain, and the city's wealth of history and culture is equally appealing. The gates of Las Puertas de Tierra guard the ancient center of Cádiz, an enchanting array of distinct barrios like La Viña, the historic fisherman's neighborhood, and Santa María, where the origins of the flamenco song developed. Be sure to experience the dramatic beauty of this art form at a local flamenco show. The region surrounding Cádiz showcases other traditional arts, such
as the equestrian ballet of Andalusian horses and the crafting of sherry wine in Jerez de la Frontera. Just upriver, the grand architecture of Seville ranges from the 11th-century Alcázar royal palace to the 20th-century Plaza de España.

Portugal's capital on the Atlantic Ocean is comprised of several key districts built on seven hills. A good place to begin is the historic Alfama district, a maze of medieval streets and alleyways leading to a hilltop on which you will find the Castelo de São Jorge. One of Lisbon's most popular attractions, the castle provides sweeping views over the city. Descend to the riverfront Baixa district to enjoy its shopping, restaurants and neoclassical architecture. The Bélem district is home to a pair of UNESCO World Heritage sites: Bélem Tower, celebrating the Age of Discovery, and Jerónimos Monastery, a prime example of ornate Manueline architecture. If time permits, the charming villages of Sintra and Cascais are only a short distance away, and many choose to make the pilgrimage from Lisbon to Fátima, where apparitions of the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917.
